“Grrr”, “Argh” and “Oh for Goodness’ sake” – all things you might hear when someone’s using their smartphone. (Along with a few words less suitable for those of a sensitive disposition…)
But from today, you might hear those words a little less often.
Because if you have the new Smartphone Help is at Hand books and something goes wrong with your phone, instead of getting frustrated you can just pick up the book, glance at the contents page, flick to the relevant page and follow the step by step instructions to put it right.
You can discover more details on how it works, what’s covered and who they’re suitable for here. (Oh and about how to get hold of a copy – they won’t help unless you actually have them I’m afraid!)
Have a read of the details and see if they might help you.
Thanks for all your recent info Tim, but I don’t have a smart phone, so don’t think I’m being rude by not responding. But I like to read your stuff and find it informative as to what is going on in the electronic world! At 85 I don’t really need all the things you young people need to do!

Hello – that’s no problem.
One of the things I find frustrating about most techies and technical experts is they seem to think everyone needs to use every new type of gadget. I think it all depends on what’s right for you – and what you find useful.
So don’t worry – if you don’t have a smartphone, that’s fine – and I’d be the last person to suggest everyone should have one!
Tim
Tim,
Like Alf my wife and I do not want or have a smartphone, but she makes the same nosise when trying to use her Android tablet. We have your DVDs but one thing which I don’t believe you cover is why and what to do when the screen you are working on vanishes and other similar occurrences.
Norman
Hello
You’re right, the DVDs are really about how to use the tablet rather than what to do when it goes wrong – and tablets can be just as frustrating as smartphones in that regard.
We do actually have a “tablet version” of these new smartphone books – we actually published that one first, early last year. (If you’d like to read more about them, the information is here.)
Thinking about it, you’re probably not the only one who doesn’t have a smartphone but who might be thinking “If only there was a similar book for tablets” – I should have mentioned that in one of the Tech Tips emails. I’ll remember to mention it at some point next week!
Tim
I agree with these two responses, I can claim 93 years. While one’s screen goes blank from time to time, and either recovers spontaneously, or after you have switched off and gone for a coffee is irritating, but I try to be patient!
Sadly my typing has deteriorated badly as well!
