Keynotes, updates and the Library

Hello

Tomorrow is Apple’s regular autumn “Keynote” speech, where they’ll tell us all about what’s coming up and how well they’ve done this year.  Most of it’s corporate waffle if I’m honest, but one announcement that’s always made is the launch date for the new versions of iOS for iPhones and iPadOS for iPads.  If they’re true to form, you’ll be able to get the new software either later this week or next week.

If you have an iPhone or iPad that can run iOS14, you’ll be able to get the new version of the software.  And the update will happen automatically at some point over the next month or so.  But if you want to get it as soon as it comes out, here’s how:

  1. Open the settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on “General” and then “Software update”.  If it finds the update, you should have a “Download and Install “ option – tap on that and job’s a good’n.

If you have an Android phone or tablet, there’s also just been a big update to Android – but chances are it won’t affect you for a while at least.  The way it works with Android is that only the newest “Pixel” phones (made by Google) get the new software to begin with, and then it’s slowly rolled out with various tweaks and changes made by the individual manufacturers.

So it’s not something to worry about for now.

Articles, eBooks and videos on the Inner Circle

Last week, I was telling you about my own favourite ways to get hold of eBooks and magazine articles, but there was one place that I didn’t mention – our very own Tech Inner Circle!  As a member, you’ll find all our books in the “Library” part of the Inner Circle website, and you can either read them on the website, download them or print them out for later.

I thought I’d give you a bit more detail about what’s there…

For example, on the shelves you’ll find a book we wrote a couple of years ago called “Making the Miles Fade” – all about different ways to use technology to keep in touch with your friends and family.  It’s a full, 88-page A4 book, complete with lots of pictures of the screen.  It guides you through using calls and texts, email, instant messaging, video calling, social media and blogs to bring you closer (metaphorically speaking) to your nearest and dearest.

There’s also “Backing Up Demystified” – a guide to using physical things like flash drives, or a “cloud” online backup, to keep your photos and other personal files safe.  Or how about: “All You Need to Know About Music, Radio and Podcasts”, “How to Speed Up Your PC” or “What to do if your Facebook account is hacked…” – the titles say it all!

Some of these are only available to members – non-members can’t get them anywhere, at any price.  Others are (or have been) available to non-members for sale or as free gifts with other books – but Inner Circle members can get them quickly and easily without paying a penny extra.

That’s not all of them, of course (we’ve even got an eBook about eBooks!), and we’ll be adding more in the future.  But that gives you a bit of a taste of what’s there.

Or if you prefer your reading in more bite-sized chunks, the Library is also home to our selection of short articles on all things tech.  Don’t know your TILs from your NSFWs?  Check out our recent quick guide to acronyms in the Social Media section of the Library.

Or for when reading about something just isn’t enough, you might find one of our video guides fits the bill.  See how the What Three Words app really works, or watch Mike and his mum (what a star!) demonstrate video calling on WhatsApp.

You can read all about the Tech Inner Circle – including what else you get for your membership – here.

Yours
Julie Wakeling

PS If you’ve decided you want to give the Inner Circle a try there’s a 30 day trial, so if you decide it’s not for you in that time you get every penny back!  You can join online here or give us a call on 01229 777606 and we’ll sign you up.

You can be joined in moments and get stuck into one of the eBooks, Quick Guides or Video Guides minutes later.
