362 useful tips? What? Just how long is this email going to have to be to fit them all in?

Well, don’t worry – I’m not going to write hundreds of pages,. I’ll explain what I mean in a moment.

But first I wanted to carry on with something from last time.

Last time I told you about the difference between wi-fi and mobile data, also called 3g or 4g. And there’s one more thing you might want to know about it. (Well, I say want to know – I don’t mean you’re itching to know it, can’t wait, desperate to find out. More that it might be useful!)

It’s this: using wi-fi and using mobile data is OK on the battery. But when your phone is looking around for new wi-fi networks, looking for one to connect to, that can use up the battery faster.

So if I’m going out anywhere with my phone and I want to make sure the battery doesn’t run out, I’ll turn off wi-fi, just so it won’t be constantly looking around, trying to find a network.

It’s different at home or if I’m at work, where it can connect to a wi-fi network and stay connected to it. But if you’re in the car on a longish journey or out and about, you can make the battery last longer by turning wi-fi off so it doesn’t keep trying to connect.

Incidentally, if you do want to make your battery last longer before it runs down, turning off location in the settings menu will make a big difference, too. It does mean you can’t use it as a sat-nav (without turning it back on again), but it will make the battery last much longer.

Worth knowing if you’re out and about and don’t want your battery to run down.

362 useful tips (and counting)
So – I mentioned 362 tips. Don’t worry, I’m not going to list them all here.

We’ve been going through older issues of these emails – ones from right back when I started doing them in 2005. And putting them into the system that stores the archive of these emails, so you can get at them all in one place.

You can have a look – just go here to see the online version of these emails, then on the right you can click on select month and year, under “Newsletter Archive”. We haven’t quite got all the way back to 2005 as I type this, but we’re almost there.

Some of the older emails are out of date, of course (there’s one saying about the new version of Windows called Windows Vista, which is now being phased out!) but there are also some that a really handy still.

The “Mini-article” in October 2006, for example, is still really handy to know – and I still use it all the time.

Anyway, as well as choosing a particular month and seeing what I wrote then, this means all the older issues are also in the search facility. To use that you go to the online version of these emails, just as above. Then you click or tap in the search box over on the right, just below where it says “The Helpful Book Company website”. Type in whatever you’re looking for, click or tap on search and it’ll find you the relevant issues of my emails, all the way back through the years.

You might find it interesting to have a browse – who knows what useful tricks and tips you’ll discover. Don’t worry, though. I’m not expecting you to read all 362!
