A correction, more on Vista and Microsoft make an exception

A quick update – there are two things I wanted to mention after Monday’s email from me. This is only really of interest if you have Windows Vista – otherwise you can just delete this email now if you like!

First of all, I didn’t mention this, but it turns out that in fact Google Chrome is no longer going to be updated if you have Windows Vista – so it’s not a good idea to use that as your browser. (But as far as they say as of today, Firefox still will be updated, so that one’s fine.)

But I mentioned that Microsoft weren’t going to be doing updates to older versions of Internet Explorer – only for version 11. And since Vista can’t run 10 or 11, only 9 or older, I said if you had Vista, you’d need to switch.

Well, it turns out Microsoft made an exception. In fact they aren’t going to update older versions of Internet Explorer UNLESS you have Vista – in which case you can still get updates to Internet Explorer version 9 (the newest it can run).

So if you have Vista, you’ll still be able to use Internet Explorer 9 (though if you have an older version, you should update to version 9).

If you have Windows 7 or later, then you won’t get updates to version 9, so you need to update to version 11.

My apologies – I’d like to have some clever excuse but the truth is I simply missed the small print in the message Microsoft sent me. As Edward would say “Oh, bonkers” – his favourite phrase when something goes wrong.

Anyway, if you have Windows Vista, just make sure you have Internet Explorer 9, not an earlier version.
If you have Windows 7, 8.1 or 10, then make sure you’re using Internet Explorer 11, not an earlier version.
