An interesting website someone told me about

This content is 9 years old. Please, read this page keeping its age in mind. Thank you.

It’s been a bit manic here – I mentioned a while ago that we’re looking for someone to help in our little customer service team and we’ve been busy interviewing possible people.

We’re determined to find someone who we’re sure will be efficient as well as lovely to everyone on the phones… though I must admit, we were very tempted when one candidate mentioned she was really into baking as a hobby. We tried to stay professional and not be swayed by the lure of maybe getting sticky buns of a Monday…  (Though we didn’t rule it against her, even though it might not be good for my waistline).

Then to add to the fun of it, the Barclaycard system we use for taking all card payments went down for a day – not just for us, for everyone who uses it. Apologies if you were caught up in the kerfuffle of ringing up and not being able to be told straight away whether your payment went through. All sorted now, though.

Anyway, in amongst all that, someone told me about a website I wanted to share with you because I found it interesting:

www.wordmap.co (It’s not a typo, it does just end .co, not .com or .co.uk)
You type in any word, in any language and it shows you what the relevant word is in different countries (it talks, too, so you can hear it as it does it, if you turn your speakers up).

You can see how countries near each other sometimes have similar words for the same thing… and sometimes don’t.

I found it particularly interesting as Julie had just been telling the boys about French words for colours… and I was chatting with them about how some of the words were similar to English ones (like Orange) and some aren’t.

By the way, a big thank you to everyone who passed on all the nice comments about the little Windows 10 booklet I mentioned last time. It’s always nice to know that the things we do are helping people!

If you haven’t got your copy and you aren’t sure what’s going on with Windows 10 and how it might affect you, you can download it (or read it online or print it out) here.

    Hello
at the moment, you can only pay for books online when you order them from the main website (http://www.helpfulbooks.co.uk), not for books after you’ve got them on free trial – so the best way is to ring up (01229 777606 and pay by card over the phone) or post us a cheque.
Funnily enough, I think you’re the first person to ever ask to pay online after ordering them on free trial. Of course, that might just be because no-one else has thought to ask, so I’ll do a bit of asking around and see if it would be popular – if so, it might be something I add soon… watch this space…

Yes Tim, it would be useful to pay on line. It is as well you mentioned this as I had forgotten that I had not paid for the books. Normally I pay for everything when I order and do not like owing money. My memory is not good so the sooner I settle an account, the happier I am.

    Keep up the good work!
