Time flies and a bit more detail…

This content is 5 years old. Please, read this page keeping its age in mind. Thank you.

If you’ve been reading my emails for a while (and I know some people have stuck with me for more than ten years – I must be doing something right!) then you might have noticed that sometimes I write about the same thing a year or two later.

Sometimes it’s because people who’ve only started reading my emails recently might not have seen the older email.

Sometimes it’s because a reminder can often be handy… or I want to talk about it from a different angle.

Sometimes it’s because something’s changed so I want to talk about how it is now.

(And sometimes it just might possibly be because I’ve forgotten I wrote about it…)

Well, today is all 3 (not the 4th one!)  I first wrote about this topic 6 years ago – time flies…

Do you know what QR codes are?  They look like weird little square barcodes.  You get them on everything from adverts to magazine articles to TV programmes to cereal packets.

In a nutshell it’s an easy way to give you a web link that you can use on your phone or tablet without having to type it in.  So many web addresses are long and complicated – and typing them on a small screen can be fiddly.

With a QR code you can just point the camera on your device at it and *bing* it takes you straight to the webpage.

Now, here’s the bit that’s changed: when I wrote about them in a previous email, I said you needed to download a special app to use them.  (Because you did.) You’d start that app, point the camera at the QR code and it’d do it’s thing.

But things have changed.  On most modern phones and tablets you don’t need a special app. You can just start the normal camera app you use and point the camera at the QR code.

It makes it more convenient because you don’t need to either have planned to use QR codes or stop to download an app first – you can just use the camera app you already have.  So even if you’re reading this thinking “I’m not sure I’ll ever want to use a QR code” if at any point in the future you do want to, you don’t need to fiddle about getting a new app on your phone – just use the camera app that’s already there.

Just a Few Days – so what’s in the course…

I don’t know if you remember, but the “Tablets Made Simple” course we launched recently is only available to enrol in until this Wednesday.  (At 5 pm UK time.)

When I first launched it, that seemed quite a way off – but it’s nearly here.

So if you are interested, you have until Wednesday – then we close enrolment. (If you’ve already joined then you will still have access of course – we only close enrolment to new people.)

Several people have also asked for a bit more detail about exactly what’s covered – well, here’s what the different parts of the course are:

  • Part 1 – Introducing Your iPad/Tablet
  • Part 2 – Using Your iPad/Tablet: The Basics
  • Part 3 – Browsing the Web with Safari/Chrome
  • Part 4 – Email and Messaging
  • Part 5 – More Apps
  • Part 6 – Using Your iPad/Tablet: Some Fancier Features
  • Part 7 – Settings and Customising

(If you want to know exactly what topics are in each part, you can read that here.)

Anyway, if you want to read more about the course you can find out about how it works, who it’s suitable for and so on here… and that’s where you can sign up to it if you want to.

Don’t forget, at 5pm (UK time) on Wednesday, we’ll take down the “sign-up page” so if you’re interested best do it now.
